Nathan Ukens, born and raised in Tulsa, OK, is currently Fourth Horn in the New Mexico Philharmonic and acting Principal horn of the Santa Fe Symphony. Nathan began his musical studies at the age of 6 on piano and eventually landed on the Horn. He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 2010 with a Master’s of Music where he studied with Gregory Hustis, Principal Horn of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He received his Bachelor’s of Music from Oklahoma State University in 2008 under the instruction of Lanette Lopez Compton, Fourth Horn of the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra.
Nathan has performed with many other orchestras including Music in the Mountains Classical Music Festival where he is currently Fourth Horn, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra were he was previously Fourth Horn, Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Wind Symphony and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Nathan also performs with local Albuquerque music organizations like Church of Beethoven, Chatter, and the Figueroa Project. While living in Stillwater, OK, Nathan recorded several tracks with a band called Other Lives which can be heard on their debut album Other Lives released in April 2009 by TBD Records. Subsequently one of these tracks, Black Tables, was featured in the ABC series Ugly Betty as well as the ABC series Grey’s Anatomy. In his free time, Nathan spends his afternoons hitting tennis balls for his two 35 mile per hour couch potatoes (whippets) Lorelei and Bentley.
